Planning a Deck Staining Project Around a Pool
A protection-first process for cleaning, preparing and coating elevated deck boards, rails and lattice near water.
A poolside deck combines sun, water, foot traffic and many edges that are difficult to coat. The plan must protect the pool while creating a safe work sequence for deck boards, rails, stairs and lattice.
Control debris and overspray
The water, coping, nearby furniture and mechanical equipment should be protected from sanding dust, cleaning solution and coating. Wind direction matters, especially when lattice or railings are sprayed.
Prepare high-wear areas
Deck-board edges, raised fasteners, splinters and failing coating receive extra attention. Cleaning is followed by drying, sanding where needed and tightening or replacing suitable fasteners before stain begins.
Horizontal walking surfaces and vertical rails weather differently. Application method and product choice should respect those different exposures.
Plan a usable exit path
Coating is sequenced so the crew does not paint itself into a corner. Stairs, landings and access gates are scheduled around cure time, weather and the owner’s access needs.
