What to Check Before Painting Vinyl Siding
Cleaning, color selection, coating compatibility and application conditions that matter on vinyl exteriors.
Vinyl siding can often be refreshed with paint, but it is not treated exactly like wood or masonry. Heat absorption, surface movement and product compatibility all influence the final system.
Identify the siding condition
Cracked, loose or distorted panels should be addressed before painting. Oxidation, chalk, mildew and residue must be cleaned from the surface so the coating is bonding to the siding rather than to contamination.
Respect color and product limits
A very dark color can absorb more heat than the original siding was designed to handle. Use a coating system approved for vinyl and follow the manufacturer’s color guidance to reduce the risk of warping.
Test adhesion and appearance in a small area when the existing surface or prior coating is uncertain.
Apply under suitable conditions
Work is scheduled around sun, heat, wind and rain. Coats are applied evenly without flooding the laps or sealing drainage paths that the siding assembly needs.
